Cyber Security Podcasts you must listen to in 2020

With over 750,000 active podcasts last year there truly is a podcast for every industry — and cyber security is no different.

If you’re looking for a convenient way to stay up to date with the latest cyber security news and expert opinions in 2020, then podcasts are a convenient solution.

If you struggle to find the time to visit cyber security conferences or you just need a way to pass time on your daily commute, podcasts are your friend.

We asked our consultants what their favourite cyber security podcasts were and here’s a rundown of the top 8:

This weekly podcast is made by the current affairs website VICE who bring you the tech publication Motherboard. It is heavily focused on breaking news stories in the world of hacking and online security.

Ben Makuch talks to reporters Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai and Joseph Cox about the stories they’ve been following over the past 7 days. They frequently have intriguing guests ranging from famous hackers to cyber security researchers. This is well-researched and definitely worth a listen.

2. Security Now

Two high-regarded experts discuss a wide range of cyber security issues in a way that is entertaining and easy to understand.

Steve Gibson (the man who created the first-ever spyware program) and Leo Laporte (AKA The Tech Guy) make a dynamic duo. Together they cover news, tech info, case studies and security advice.

However, with over 700 episodes available on their website it might take you a few months to get caught up…

3. The Cyber Wire

For those who really can’t get enough cyber security news, this podcast offers a daily news bulletin. These bitesize episodes are particularly helpful for anyone working in the cyber security industry because they offer real-time updates on the latest hacking news stories.

There are no in-depth discussions here, as Cyber Wire aims to ‘separate the signal from the noise’. For busy IT leaders, this easily digestible content is a useful medium for staying up-to-date.

4. Cybersecurity Interviews

Douglas Brush sits down with various guests who work in the cyber security arena to find out what makes them tick. From thought leaders to social media influencers, each conversation is unique, personal and entertaining.

Expect insights on career progression as well as frank discussions and opinions to broaden your industry knowledge. Whether you’re a CEO or a complete beginner, this varied podcast has something for everyone.

5. Smashing Security

Cyber security doesn’t need to be boring and hosts Graham Cluley and Carole Theriault demonstrate that with their fresh take on the week’s tech. It’s no surprise that they have won the award for ‘Best Security Podcast’ two years running.

With well over 100 episodes, there is a back catalogue of binge-worthy episodes waiting for you to download.

6. Hackable

This professionally produced podcast is made by software company McAfee and delves into what really goes on in the mind of a hacker. Each episode is hosted by Geoff Siskind and resident cyber security expert Bruce Snell.

Together they take a peek behind the curtain of modern tech. You’ll hear how the average person is susceptible to cyber attacks through their webcams, cars and maybe even their coffee maker. Prepare to question everything you thought you knew from here on in.

7. Malicious Life

This podcast is produced and sponsored by Cybereason. It covers a mixture of famous breaches and lesser-known cyber crimes from past to present. Host Ran Levi does a stellar job of interviewing a range of hackers and experts, digging into hacking culture going back as far as the 1970s.

From the early days of spam to the major threats that continue to line the pockets of cyber criminals, this podcast offers some big picture insights on the cyber security industry as a whole.

8. Cyber Speaks Live

With podcasts growing in popularity, it’s understandably difficult to stand out from the crowd. But Cyber Speaks Live is attempting to disrupt the status quo with a format that encourages audience participation.

Each episode is hosted by Duncan McAlynn and a different guest every week. Listeners are encouraged to interact live, with the audio recording uploaded afterwards. With past guests such as Troy Hunt and Jack Daniel, this innovative take on podcasting is worth a listen.
